Running Gear: what’s really essential?

by Corey on May 6, 2011

Some people might take up running because is an “inexpensive” sport. All you need are sneakers, right?

Well, sure, if you’re a very low-maintenance runner. But by the time you invest in sneakers, clothing (for all varieties of weather), music-listening equipment, a GPS watch, water bottles, compression socks, recovery equipment like foam roller and special ice packs, race entries…it can add up fast!

In my opinion, you don’t really “need” everything that some runners might swear by. In my experience, you can run (and get faster) without spending a lot of money.

A Basic Watch

Just one that has a stop watch, and preferably does laps. I know everyone and their mother has a Garmin (I do too!) but I am living proof that you do not need a GPS watch to run, or to get faster.

I trained for and ran a sub-3:26 marathon without a Garmin. In fact, my watch was so basic it didn’t even have a lap feature. It just told time. I used to remember the street names where the mile markers were, so that I knew roughly where each mile began and ended, and I could subtract based on total time on my watch. It was probably a pretty inaccurate system, but it couldn’t have been that bad since I clearly got much faster over the course of my training.

I used the Timex Marathon Watch for years, and it was about $25.

If you’re just starting out running or not sure how into it you’ll get, don’t jump into the Garmin. Wait and see how it goes with a regular watch first. I also think there is something important to be said for running by feel, and not worrying about pace.

Some Dri-FIT Clothing (or any moisture-wicking fabric)

You hear “cotton is bad! it absorbs your sweat!” everywhere, right? Well, it’s true. But that doesn’t mean you need to go buy 6 or 7 Dri-FIT shirts to get you through a week of workouts. When it’s hot out and you’re doing a long run or speedwork and losing a lot of sweat, Dri-FIT will definitely make your workout much more pleasant.

But I don’t think it’s necessary to always be wearing “running clothing” while running, and you certainly don’t need to be decked out in full Nike or LuLuLemon every time you head out the door.

When I go to the gym to do cross-training, if I’m just going for an easy 4-5 miler, or if it’s chilly out and I know I won’t be sweating much, I have no problem wearing a regular cotton t-shirt. I know that goes against what most people would say, but really, having a damp shirt at the end of a semi-short workout won’t kill you. I prefer to save money invest in fewer nice running pieces.

Also, over the years you can build your “running wardrobe.” Don’t think you need to get everything at once. Family members love to give you gifts you’ll use, and running clothing is a great thing to suggest.

I would start with:

  • 1 pair of shorts
  • 1 nice Dri-FIT t-shirt
  • 1 nice Dri-FIT  long-sleeve
  • running tights

Anything with pockets are always a good idea!

Sneakers that are right for you

Even though I’m a total sucker for thinks that are pretty, things Kara Goucher wears, and things the color pink, with sneakers it’s best to ignore all of those impulses and go solely by fit.

If possible, go to a running store that will watch you run and recommend something based on your stride and foot strike. (I am going to do this once my injury heals, because as loyal as I have been to Asics, I’m not convinced I’m running in the best possible shoes for me.)

Strength workout “bare minimum” equipment

Strength training is really important to me, and I know it makes me a better runner. When I can’t make it to the gym, I like to have what I consider the “bare minimum”to get in some kind of full-body strength workout in at home. Even if it’s only 15 minutes, it’s better than skipping it all together! Also, when I’m home watching TV, it’s a great time for me to get in a little extra strength training.

Here are my essentials:

  • a set of 10 pound weights (around $15)
  • a stability ball (around $20)
  • a yoga mat (anywhere from $10 for a cheap one to $80 for a nice one)

With just these 3 things, I can work my abs on the stability ball, my arms with the weights and push-ups, my legs with lunges, squats and exercises with the ball, and “full-body” strength plus stretching with the yoga mat.

Whatever You Need to Stay Injury-Free

Things that will keep you from being injured are also a very wise investment. Some examples:

Of course usually we all need to draw the line somewhere. Weekly sport massages would probably be great for me in terms of faster recovery and injury prevention, but that is far from being in my budget. Also, I can do with icing with frozen veggies, and some people say that using a rolling pin on your muscles is just as good as foam rolling.

Good headphones

If you listen to music while you run, actual sport headphones are worth the investment. When it comes to headphones, I tried to skimp and get by with the ipod headphones for a long time.

IMG_1651

But they just didn’t work for me after a while. They’re not exactly meant for rigorous exercise and a lot of sweating! There are plenty of good sport headphones out there, and lots of different styles, so find the one that is most comfortable for you.

I actually won these headphones from a giveaway on Heather‘s blog recently.

These even come with different sized attachments to make sure they fit properly.

Headphones need to fit in your ears well, and even if you jump around they shouldn’t fall out.

From someone who is on a budget, I understand not wanting to spend money on every running accessory, and I really believe that you can get started running successfully and improve with these basics.

What are you running essentials?

Are there popular items you could live without?

i was late to the game on the garmin too! this is a great list… good job at pointing out the basics of the basics!

the fuel belt. i hardly ever run without one – always need my keys, phone, chews, money, etc – and not creative enough to find good places to stash everything! haha

happy weekend!

I ran for 10+ years without a Garmin so it’s definitely not essential, but I wouldn’t want to give it up now!
At this point, other than the Garmin, my essentials are my Nike capris and tempo shorts, good sports bras, a fuel belt for long runs, and my beloved Asics 2160s.

I definitely haven’t even heard of a few of the injury prevention/recovery items! My essentials are good shoes and a good bra, to be completely honest. I never run with music, so I guess that’d be the ‘essential’ that I can do without, along with the fancier self-massage tools. I just make it a priority to stretch and it’s worked for me so far! :)

Great post. For running outside, I do really like my Garmin. And Lululemon running tights. But you are 100% right – we don’t need all the fancy gear every single day! I have yet to buy good headphones too.

Running gear can definitely start to add up! I want to invest in a Garmin sometime soon, but my basic watch works for me now. I always find great tech gear for cheap at TJ Maxx, but cotton tees work well if I’m just going for a short run or short workout.

It’s funny because I started running because I was too poor to join a gym but the equipment and races add up! I think drifit stuff is less important in summer because even though you sweat more, you don’t have to worry about getting cold.
Also, I get a ton of running clothes as presents these days! Over the years you can really accumulate a collection.

I’d say the one essential piece of gear has been a (wide) sweat head band (any type) for all season runs. In the summer, I use it just for sweat and in the winter I can put it over my ears to keep warm! It was the best $12 investment I made! I also love my running hats — those have become the gear go-to of choice lately — helps the sun, rain, and sweat all stay out of my eyes!

Pockets, good shoes, and music are my essentials. I love running shorts amd skirts that have pockets someplace for my keys, gel etc. With out music I would be able to go for 3 miles max then start freaking out bc I hear myself breathing! I def. think music makes me a better runner!

My running essential is my ipod and my armband. I scored the armband on amazon for 4 bucks! Not bad considering I’ve used it for more almost 2 years.
Good shoes are also a must.
While I love running with my garmin (and prefer to) I know that I can train to (and run) a sub 2 hour half marathon without it because that’s what I did for my first half. :D

I’m very simple when it comes to running essentials. For me, it’s sneakers, a good pair of compression shorts, wicking t-shirts and a simple watch. I would eventually like a Garmin so that I can accurately track my pace.

My list of “essentials” has grown over the years, that’s for sure! I just got a Garmin this past summer but can’t imagine running without it now. I also couldn’t go without my foam roller and compression socks. I don’t use headphones though, and have a good collection of dry-fit race t-shirts so I don’t feel the need to buy too many new ones.

I am training for a 5k and I don’t have a garmin. I really really want one though, because after my 5k I want to do train for 10ks and half marathons and marathons!

My essentials are my RoadID thing that straps to my shoe and holds my keys and my ipod arm band. I have a Garmin, but I could do without it. I don’t wear it half the time.

I need shorts that don’t ride up… any suggestions? Mine keep bunching, which I can’t stand.

I totally want a garmin, I’m ashamed to admit. And thanks for the list btw, I need a lot of those things (the stability ball, stick, etc)

That is annoying when shorts do that…maybe yoga shorts would work better, since they’re much more fitted and not as much material. I know people who prefer to run in yoga shorts for that very reason.

I have been running for 4 months and am loving it, I agree not too much expense is needed. Now that I`m in love am just starting to look around for good gear. I`ve been having great success with eBay, am counting the minutes till my Garmin arrives and better shoes. This is a great list for starting out!

I have lots of running gear, but that’s after years of birthday, Christmas and yes–Mother’s Day–presents! My iPod and Garmin are my two expensive gadgets. Good running shoes are key. And, I usually wear a tech shirt, running socks, and compression shorts. Body glide can be key to preventing chafing — I wish I’d known about that when I first started running.

I have a garmin, but since I’ve moved away from marathoning and onto the trails, I generally just attach it to my pack to track my total distance. I don’t even turn it off for pit stops or run-ins with friends – such a novel concept!

I know it’s not an essential, but I can’t imagine running without a Garmin! It’s been four years and I’m probably too dependent on it now. I never run with music, so that’s not necessary for me either. From running for a million years, I have SO many race tshirts that I find it acceptable to run in cotton much more than other people, although I do appreciate drifit. (I also rewear my drifit clothes multiple times between washes…don’t tell anyone!)

I wear cotton shirts almost every time I work out indoors. This is absolutely crazy to admit but I sorta love seeing how much I sweat after! All I really need is a great pair of spandex shorts- don’t care about the brand and a drifit t for outside runs. Don’t need a Garmin but I do love it now that I have one. Oh and my favorite thing for a long run- a running partner! Thats makes everything better : )

That’s funny, I Just bought a pair of those headphones recently! My regular iPod headphones broke, and I was having trouble with them staying in my ears, anyway, so I asked the running store if they had any suggestions, and they recommended those! So far I think I like them!:)

My absolute absolute essentials are good shoes and a good sports bra!! I’ve had a hard time finding sports bras that I really like, haha. Next is some kind of watch (although when I first got back into running after college I sometimes would forget it and just go off of my iPod time, haha!), and although it’s not essential, I do love my Garmin!:)

A sports bra (I’m an A cup, so not picky at all!), shorts, socks, running shoes, and a basic sports watch are all i need. oh, and a pony tail holder/rubberband!

i have a Garmin, but usually i don’t bother with it unless i’m doing a tempo or important long run. it takes too long to find satellites in the city!

greeeeeeeat post, Corey!!! I actually have those same headphones… bought them at a running expo for one of my half’s back in December, I love ‘em! And I agree with you on how it’s completely okay to run in cotten if you’re not going hard, of if it’s cooler outside. I totally do that, too! I’m intereted in seeing what type of new shoe you’re fitted for… I’ve always been an Asics girl myself!
